about
Supergolden Approximations is an artwork created during my residency at the University of Bristol School of Maths, and in collaboration with researchers Demi Allen, Felix Flicker, and Henna Koivusalo.
It looks at the infinite, never-repeating sequences that can be found within irrational numbers (in this case, the supergolden ratio), and how these sequences grow. The supergolden sequence is formed of three different events, appearing in this piece as musical ideas (represented by the three colours) and individual notes within ideas (represented by the three columns). The three instrument groups are represented by the three rows in the artwork.
As the sequence grows, and gets increasingly complex, it acts as a better approximation to the number that created it: the supergolden ratio.
